| Melissa Jones at Loras College |
Melissa (Franzen) Jones (Ph.D., Space and Planetary Sciences, 2006) was invited by her undergraduate institution, Loras College, to give the keynote commencement address at the May graduation ceremonies. She is one of the youngest Loras Commencement speakers in the history of the institution.
Jones was specifically selected by the Loras Class of 2008 as someone that was inspirational in terms of success in graduate school and early career accomplishment but still able to connect to the graduating class, only having graduated six years ago with a B.S. in Chemistry.
In her speech, she highlighted being responsible for one’s own career path, the advantages of being multidisciplinary, the importance of a contact network, and learning from failure through examples from her undergraduate and graduate school experiences. Jones also spoke about her experiences at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which is where she is currently employed.
