STORI Workshop

(Summer Triangle:  Observing, Research, and Inquiry)

Astronomy Workshop for Teachers Grades 4-8
Workshop is FREE
June 18-22, 2007

Come join us for a week-long, hands-on astronomy workshop that will focus on learning about astronomy by doing astronomy.  The Summer Triangle:  Observing, Research, and Inquiry (STORI) is for all teachers who want to learn more about basic astronomy concepts, observing, and current exploration of our Solar System (including Space Center projects on asteroids!).

No specific science background is needed, just the willingness to work with others in a learning environment and a commitment to bring what you learn back to your schools.  The program includes 30 contact hours during the week-long workshop plus at least an additional 30 hours of on-line discussions during the school year.  STORI is designed to help teachers reach the goals of the Arkansas Science Standards for these grades.  The Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences will work with your school district to obtain development credit for participation in this workshop.

STORI is based on a similar program in Arizona and Ohio, and as part of STORI, you will become a part of a growing community of teachers around the US who are participating in these programs.  Our listserv will allow you to “talk” to other teachers, learn from their experiences, and collaborate on observations by students in all three states.

The project staff includes:  Dr. Larry Lebofsky, a planetary scientist and educator from the University of Arizona; and, Nancy Lebofsky, an instructional specialist now working with the Science Center of Inquiry.

The workshop will meet Monday through Friday (June 18-22) in Fayetteville at the University of Arkansas from 4:00 pm until 10:30 pm.  Classes will meet in room 302 of the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences located in the Old Museum Building on the Fayetteville campus.  We expect to be able to support up to 10 teachers in STORI and to provide room and board for those teachers from outside the Fayetteville area.  Housing will be provided in the nearby NW Quads that room four people per apartment; bedrooms are single.

All participating teachers will be given a telescope that they can use with their students and for other educational purposes and a subscription to Night Sky magazine.
