Date: 3/2/1998 - "Artists on the Space Frontier"

Public Lecture (free)
Presenter: Dr. William K. Hartmann, Planetary Sciences Institute, Tucson, Arizona.
Giffels Auditorium, Old Main, 7:00 PM

Dr. Hartmann will give an oveview of space exploration and the world of artists who are inspired by space discoveries.  He will discuss how this "astronomical art" fits in the long tradition of American frontier artists.

"But the great triumphs of technology and exploration do not begin as full-fledged plans.  They begin as dreams.  Jules Verne said that what one person can imagine, another can do.  Imagination precedes implementation.  Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "I have a dream", not "I have a plan".  Dreams precede plans.  And dreams are images:  Hence our pictures.  We hope that they will conjure an image in the mind of our readers, especially the younger readers, who will move the world into the next millennium.  Once they have this image, they can draw up the blueprints."
