| Honors REU Students |
The space center welcomed its first group of Honors REU students this semester. The students will be part of the program through the Spring 2007 semester. In this program, the students will take several field trips, as well as prepare a poster and oral presentation in collaboration with a space center faculty member who shares their research interest. The students are listed below.
| Michael Hinds is a sophomore Computer Engineering major. His mentor is Rick Ulrich, deputy director of the space center and a faculty member in the department of Chemical Engineering. | |
| Ashley Stewart is a sophomore Physics major. Her mentor is Julia Kennefick, a member of the space center and a faculty member in the department of Physics. | |
| Tanushree Thote is a sophomore Biological Engineering major. Her mentor is Mack Ivey, a faculty member in the department of Biological Sciences. | |
| Josiah Walton is a sophomore Physics major. His mentor is also Julia Kennefick. |

The book “Advanced Electronic Packaging, 2nd ed.”, edited by Rick Ulrich, the deputy director of the space center and a faculty member in the department of Chemical Engineering, and Bill Brown also of the Univ. of Arkansas, was recently released by Wiley Publishers Inc. Its eighteen chapters were contributed by some of the leading authorities in micro-electronics, including four by the editors. The book covers the various aspects of design, materials, manufacture, reliability and the future of high-performance electronics. It is expected to follow the first edition to become a standard reference for industry as well as a popular textbook. |

| James Cope |
James Cope, an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering student who works for Dr. Larry Roe, completed a summer internship at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company in Littleton, Colorado, this past summer. Dr. Roe is a member of the space center and a faculty member in the department of Mechanical Engineering.
For his internship, Cope was hired onto the Atlas V program, specifically Atlas V stages, where he worked on the 5m Payload Fairing, which is the upper part of the rocket that houses the Centaur and spacecraft. However, he was also exposed to other programs such as the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Phoenix Mars Lander, Stardust, and Genesis.
During the internship, Lockheed Martin sponsored numerous plant tours of the surrounding facilities, socials with vice presidents from various departments, luncheons discussing numerous aspects of the company, and community service activities. He was exposed to all facets of the engineering world and learned at great deal during his internship experience.
