Date: 12/3/2007 - "New Approaches for Determining the Dark Matter Content of Spiral Galaxies"

Seminar
Presenter: Dr. Marc Siegar, University of Arkansas, Little Rock.
Space Center Theater (Old Museum Building, Room 201), 12:30 PM

Dr. Siegar will present the discovery of a relationship between spiral arm pitch angle (the measure of how tightly wound spiral structure appears) and the rate of shear in the disks of spiral galaxies. This relationship is used to show that galaxies with more tightly wound spiral structure have higher mass concentrations. He will introduce the Carnegie-Irvine Nearby Galaxies Survey (CINGS), which is a survey of the 603 brightest southern hemisphere galaxies. The data products from CINGS will be useful for mass modeling of disk galaxies.
